The UK Continues to be one of the World’s Most Attractive
Economies for Foreign Investors
TORONTO (July 5, 2006) – Canadian businesses continued
to choose the UK as their preferred European investment location
in 2005/2006. A record number of 75 Canadian companies expanded
their operations into the UK, up more than 10 percent over
2004/2005 and creating more than 1,900 new jobs. By project,
Canada was the fourth largest investor in the UK behind the
U.S.A., Japan, and India but ahead of Germany, France, Ireland,

Britain has come top of the international league table of recipients
of foreign direct investment (FDI) after an exceptional year
in which it benefited from nearly a quarter of all cross-border
business, the United Nations said yesterday. more

SUMMARY
- GDP growth was 0.4% in 2005 Q2, quarter-on-quarter, and
1.7% year-on-year. New independent forecasts for 2005 average
2.1%.
- Inflation reached 2% in June and is now on target for
the first time since the adoption of the new target measure
in 2003. The MPC cut rates by 25bps on 4 August to 4.5%.
- Unemployment increased slightly to 4.8% in June, and
there was a modest fall in the employment rate from 74.8%
to 74.7%.
- For the first time since early 2001, annual house price
growth has fallen below annual earnings growth.

Canadian businesses continued to choose the UK as their preferred
European investment location in 2004/2005. Sixty-seven new
Canadian projects were set in the UK, up 24 percent over 2003/2004.
Canada finished second only to the U.S. as a leading investor
by number of projects in the UK for the 12 months ending March
31, 2005. For 2004/2005, the UK recorded its highest ever
number of inward investment projects at 1,066, creating over
39,000 new jobs, according to figures published today by UK
Trade and Investment. more

Inward investment projects coming from Canada into the UK continued
to be strong in the year 2003/2004, confirming the UK’s position
as the top investment location in Europe. Figures published today
by UK Trade & Investment show that in total the UK attracted
811 investment and expansion projects by overseas companies, including
more than 50 projects from Canada. more
IN THE United Kingdom, last year’s deregulation of the wholesale
power market lowered energy generation costs and residential electricity
prices compared with many other European energy exporting countries.
This has also required companies that only produce energy, rather
